Damini

The tears lurk
Just around, ready to spill
As we think of you ….
You woke up
A slumbering mass,
That let things be
Allowed themselves to be killed
Allowed themselves to be raped
Teased and molested
Regardless of age
Class, creed, color or shape
A very democratic atrocity
No one to question,
No elections to oust them
And then you fought
While your innards were shred
The pulp that was your gut
Choked the surgeon
Who tried stitching you back
You didn’t give up
And for once the whole nation
Hoped for a miracle
The Sun set long before
The day began …
You bid goodbye
And the checked tears flowed
Unbidden
The day that revellers rang in
A new year
Was candle lit
For the Sun hid behind
A pall of gloom
The silence on the streets
With throngs of black armbands
Deafening
Loud enough for even the stone deaf
You rest in peace
The fight is now ours
May we have an iota of your strength
And a mustard grain of your grit
We will win
If we lose….
No one wins.
